Resource Room

+ Library

The ILLCOS Communication Resource Room at Interchange Illawarra is provided to enable parents, carers, students and disability service providers with a venue to learn about and construct Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) systems (see the About AAC page for more information).

The Resource Room can be booked for a supported session, where an ILLCOS committee member can show current resources and assist with developing and/or producing visual aids. People who have used the room and are familiar with the equipment and software can book the room and work independently.

Available for use at the Resource Room;
• Computer (PC), printer, laminator and software for producing visual communication systems
• Software includes Boardmaker™ symbol program
• Space to assemble visuals
• A library of visual examples, books, and speech output equipment

As ILLCOS currently has no ongoing funding, people who access the Resource Room are asked to pay for the cost of stationery and printing. Charges are minimal and cover replacement of stationery only.

The ILLCOS Library includes over 100 items that can be borrowed by ILLCOS members. Membership is free for individuals, families, support workers and community members. Organisations and professionals (such as private Speech Pathologists) pay a small annual fee.

Items available to borrow include;
•  Communication devices – GoTalk, Big Mack, Step-by-step, ipod touch
•  Books – including books by Linda Hodgdon and Sue Larkey
•  CD Roms – with ready-to-make templates
•  DVDs – with demonstrations of how to use AAC
•  Example visuals – keyring visuals, step-by-step tasks, and more
